It's recommended that you are able to ride without really thinking about how to ride. i.e. shifting, clutch, throttle, brakes, turning, is all natural and you don't have to consciously think about it as a beginner would.

There are no special requirements for your bike. Any off the showroom floor motocross bike is ready to race. However, 125's should have a black background on their numberplates with white numbers and 250's should have white backgrounds with black numbers. Your racing number should be the last three digits of you AMA# or if you raced the same class the year before it can be your placement from the year before up to #99. If you're brand new any number is acceptable as long as somebody else in your class doesn't legitimately have that number already. Also, an X, Z ,11, etc. made with electrical tape can be used in a pinch if necessary.
